The Dunafon Castle
The Dunafon Castle is located 15 miles west of Denver in beautiful Bear Creek Canyon on Denver Mountain Parks Road (Hwy 74). Located six miles west of Morrison, CO, and four miles east of Evergreen, Colorado, midway between Idledale and Kittredge.
The Castle, completed in 1941, is built on a peninsula presenting a breathtaking view of the crystal-clear waters of Bear Creek. This stunning seventeen acre setting with 1500 feet of private trout stream is surrounded by an open space park with walking, hiking and mountain bike trails that form part of the Jefferson County Open Space Complex.
Restoration of the property was undertaken immediately upon purchase. The new owners developed the restoration plan based on existing blueprints, photographs, personal interviews with the surviving members of the Wright and Barnes families, and recommendations of professionals, and artisans with period knowledge.
Maintenance and restoration of a property of this complexity and age is a daunting task. The first order of the day was a labor force! Step 13, a drug and alcohol rehab program, was used exclusively as the source. As many as twenty residents of Step13 were on site on a daily basis to restore the castle to the condition described by the designer and builder, Mr. Wright.
Presently the residence is occupied by a fulltime caretaker. The castle is occasionally used for charity benefits. Proceeds from events go to support the continuing successof those in Step 13, Central City’s Opera program for youth, and the YMCA.
